Our History

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Norwich has a rich and storied history rooted in the heart of Norwich, Connecticut. Our congregation traces its origins to the early 19th century, when our spiritual ancestors gathered in the historic Chelsea Square area of downtown Norwich. This vibrant hub served as the first meeting place for those committed to progressive, inclusive faith rooted in reason, compassion, and social justice.
Over time, the congregation expanded and, in the 20th century, established its presence at 148 Broadway, a prominent location that became a spiritual home for many decades. It was here that the congregation deepened its commitment to Unitarian Universalist principles and engaged in social action, spiritual growth, and community outreach.

Our congregation has been shaped and guided by inspiring religious leadership throughout the years, including Rev. Tharald Olofsson, whose tenure fostered a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere and emphasized the importance of social justice and community engagement.
Rev. Dr. Sofia Betancourt, who now serves as the President of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), was also among our spiritual leaders. Her time with the congregation left a profound impact, infusing our community with her passionate dedication to racial justice, environmental ethics, and transformative ministry. We are proud to celebrate her ongoing leadership within the broader UU movement.
Another pivotal leader, Rev. Joshua Pawelek, who served our congregation before becoming the minister at the Unitarian Universalist Society: East in Manchester, Connecticut, brought a profound commitment to interfaith collaboration and social justice ministry. His time with us reinforced our congregation’s mission to be a beacon of hope, compassion, and spiritual growth.
Today, we continue to evolve and adapt, honoring our past while embracing a vibrant future. We remain deeply committed to Unitarian Universalist values—Love, Interdependence, Pluralism, Justice, Equity, Generosity, and Transformation—as we foster a spiritual home for seekers of all backgrounds.
We invite you to explore our community, learn about our history, and join us as we continue to grow and thrive together.
